½ cup sugar
1¼ shortening

1 egg
1½ cup molasses
¾ cup buttermilk (or 1 tsp. vinegar in milk)

Dissolve 4 tsp. baking soda in a little hot water - watch out it will bubble and expand

¼ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. ginger
2 tsp. cinnamon
5 cups flour (maybe more)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375º

Cream in large bowl: sugar and shortening

Add: egg, molasses, buttermilk, baking soda in water

Mix in: flour, spices, salt

Refrigerate to stiffen

Roll out, cut shapes

Cool on rack

Decorate with a little piped icing and cinnamon candies
