1 pkg. German sweet chocolate squares
1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. butter or margarine
2 c. sugar
4 egg yolks, unbeaten
1 t. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
1 c. buttermilk
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Melt chocolate in 1/2 c. boiling water. Cool.
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each yolk.
Add vanilla and melted chocolate.
Mix until blended.
Sift flour with soda and salt.
Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk.
Beat after each addition until batter is smooth.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Pour batter into 3 - 8 or 9 inch layer cake pans lined with waxed paper in the bottom.
Bake in 350 deg. oven 35 to 40 minutes. Cool.
Frost top and between layers with Coconut - Pecan Frosting
