1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
2 eggs
3 Tbsp. Nestlé's Quik
Red food coloring
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 Tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp. soda

Frosting:
1 stick margarine
1/2 cup Crisco
1 cup sugar
3 Tbsp. flour
2/3 cup cold milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
For cake: Preheat oven to 350º. Cream sugar, shortening, eggs, Nestlé's Quik and food coloring. Sift flour three times then measure flour and salt. Add flour/salt alternately with buttermilk and vanilla to creamed mixture. Mix in by hand the vinegar and soda. Prepare two 9" round cake pans by lining with parchment paper. Fill pans with batter and bake 25-30 minutes. Cool on rack

For Frosting: Cream margarine and Crisco. Add sugar slowly. Add flour one tablespoon at a time. Add milk and vanilla and whip hard with mixer until fluffy.

Remove one layer cake by running a knife around the edge and turning onto a cake plate. Remove parchment paper. Frost top and place the next layer on top. Frost top and sides with remaining frosting.
