This recipe is known by many different names. It was one of Mary's favorite cakes, and it also is one of our favorites as well. It is great for a big crowd!

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 cup dark, unsweetened cocoa
1 cup strong brewed coffee, or water, use coffee, it makes a difference
1/2 cup buttermilk (see note)
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla

Frosting
1/2 cup butter
2 Tbsp dark unsweetened cocoa
1/4 cup milk
3 1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar and soda together. In a saucepan, heat to boiling, the butter, shortening, coffee, and cocoa. Pour over the flour. Add the milk, eggs and vanilla, mix well. Pour into a greased 17 by 11 jelly roll pan. Bake at 400º for 20 minutes or till done in the middle.
Meanwhile, prepare the frosting.
In a saucepan, heat to a boil the butter, cocoa and milk. Add sugar and vanilla and mix well. Pour over the cake as soon as it comes from the oven.Sprinkle pecans over top Let cool
Note: if you don't have buttermilk, no worry. Pour 1/2 c milk into a cup add 1 Tbsp vinegar, let set a few minutes.

This is wonderful to bake and while still warm, top with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, then pour the frosting and pecans over the top.
The first time we had this cake at Aunt Mary's house in Hobart, we were there for Uncle Earl to do our income taxes. Dan loved it so much I had to take the recipe home with us.
