1½ c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. granulated sugar
3 eggs
2 tbsp. cold water
4½ c. sifted flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. chopped black walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together shortening, brown sugar granulated sugar, eggs and water. Beat well. Add flour, salt, vanilla, baking soda, and cream of tartar and blend to make a soft dough. Stir in nuts. Form dough into 2 or 3 logs wrapping each in waxed paper. Chill in the refrigerator over night. To bake slice into ¼" slices and bake at 350º until edges just begin to turn brown. Cool on rack.
