6 tbsp. shortening
4 c. flour
¼ c. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1½ tsp. baking soda
pinch of salt
1 egg, well beaten
1¼ c. buttermilk
½ c. raisins
1 tbsp. caraway seeds
Topping:
2 tbsp. melted butter
1-2 tbsp. cinnamon-sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together. Cut shortening into flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in raisins and caraway seeds. Combine well beaten egg and buttermilk; add to the crumb mixture. Kneed on a floured board 5-6 times. Divide dough in half; shape into two balls. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Pat each ball into a 6" round loaf. Using a sharp knife, cut a 4", cross about ¼" deep on the top of each loaf. Brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar. Bake at 375º 40-45 minutes or until golden brown and l bread sounds hollow when lightly tapped.
