1 can (1 pound) red pitted cherries
1 T cornstarch or flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp.salt
1/4 sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup blanched almonds
1/3 cup milk

Drain cherries; reserve 1/2 cup of the juice. Place cherries in greased 9 inch iron skillet or 10 by 6 in baking dish. Sprinkle cornstarch over fruit. Combine the 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 tsp salt and reserved cherry juice; pour over cherries.

Meanwhile, sift flour,baking powder, salt and 1/4 cup sugar together. Cut in shortening.Add almonds and mix well. Add milk; stir to make a soft dough. Drop dough by small spoonfuls on cherries. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 for 40 to 45 minutes. Serve warm with cream.

This is from my mother, Lenore Fahey. It was one of my favorite desserts as a kid. The recipe went missing, and she couldn't remember how to make it in her later years, but after she died I found a newspaper clipping of it!
