Nona's Easter Bread Recipe

Bake Tin Pan 300º Glass Pan 275º
Bake 40 - 45 minutes

¾ C Margarine (1 1/2 Sticks)
1 ½ C Warm Water
3 Pkg. Dry Yeast
¼ C Warm Water
1 tsp Sugar
4 eggs
8 C flour
¾ to 1 C sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla (could be anise seed or flavoring if you like that)
Glaze
1 beaten egg
little bit of water
tsp sugar

Melt: 1 1/2 Sticks (3/4 Cup Margarine in 1 1/2 Cups warm water
Dissolve: 3 PKG Dry Yeast inf 1/4 Cup warm water
Add: 1tsp Sugar to Yeast
Beat : 4 eggs (should be at room temperature)
Add eggs to liquid and mix together
In separate large bowl mix flour, sugar, salt together.
Add egg and liquid mixture to the flour mixture. Mix, then turn out onto floured surface and knead. Add flour as needed until hands are clean.
Place in greased bowl, cover with kitchen towel and let rise 2 hours in warm place.
Punch down, let raise again about 1 hour.
Shape into loaves. Separate into 8 pieces, split each piece into to and form ropes, approx 12" long, twist together and put in greased loaf pans.
Let raise 1 hour.
Mix egg, water, sugar and brush loaves just before you put in oven.

This is from Grandpa's Joe's Grandmother (Nona). She never measured anything so Dena (one of her daughters) came home and tried to get the recipe Nona got upset because she did not measure anything! So Dena made her put each handful or pinch into a measuring cup so she could measure it. That is how this recipe came about. I got it from the Aloisi Family Recipe Book and make it every Easter. What I have learned is that you have to feel the dough and if you need to add more flour do it. The more you make the better you will get at it.
