½ tsp. baking soda
¾ c. light or dark Karo syrup

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 F°. Brush pie shell with egg wash.

Combine all ingredients for crumbs in a small bowl and set aside.

Dissolve soda in a little cold water in a medium bowl. Add Karo, molasses, and hot water and mix well. Pour filling mixture into unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle prepared crumb mixture evenly over entire pie, reserving 2 to 3 T. for garnish after baking. Bake in preheated oven until pie is set and crust is browned, about 45 minutes (test by inserting knife into pie about halfway between edge and center. If knife comes out clean, pie is cooked.) Cool completely before slicing.

Personal Notes:
This recipe originally came from Martha Schulte, Cindy's paternal grandmother, and she called it crumb pie. Martha never gave quantities in measurements, it was 'a pinch' of soda, plus she had a special mug she used as her mixing bowl -- you were just supposed to 'fill it up' with the Karo and water. I fiddled around with it a little and came up with this one, which seems to satisfy Cindy since she eats the whole pie by herself and will only begrudgingly share a piece with her stepdad.
