1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
5 eggs, separated
1 cup of buttermilk
1 t. baking soda
2 cups flour, all purpose
1 t. vanilla
1 1/2 cups black walnuts, chopped
1 t. salt

Icing--
3/4 cup of butter (1 ½ sticks), softened
1 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 3 oz. cream cheese, softened
6 3/4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 1/2 t. vanilla
3/4 cup chopped black walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven 350º. Cream butter and shortening, gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy and sugar is dissolved. Add egg yolks, beating well. Combine buttermilk and soda, dissolving by stirring. Add flour and salt to creamed mixture alternating with buttermilk mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Stir in vanilla. Add walnuts. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into batter. Pour into 3 greased (Pam) pans. Bake for 30 minutes or until done.

Icing--Cream butter and cream cheese. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and stir in nuts. Spread on cooled three layer cake.
