1/3 cup butter
1 tbsp. shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup chopped red cherries
1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Directions:

Mix in order given. Spread in greased 8x8 pan. Bake at 375° for 10-12 minutes.
Ice with maple icing.

Recipe from Mrs. A.J. MacDonald (Sal) our neighbour across the road in Sydney Forks. When I was in Grade 4 and 5 I went to her house for lunch everyday as Mum was working at the Smart Shop. These squares were a staple at her home and Mrs. MacDonald cut them in perfect little pieces.
