8 medium tart apples
3/4 cup all purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter, cut into small pieces.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º. Peel, core and cut the apples in half and then into 1-inch chunks. Spread them evenly in a 2-quart, 2 inch deep baking dish. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse bread crumbs. Scatter the topping evenly over the apples. Tap the dish on the counter once or twice to settle the crumbs. Bake until the topping is golden brown, the juices are bubbling, and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork, 50 to 55 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice crea
