2 c. sugar
1½ c. shortening (CRISCO™️)
2 eggs
½ c. molasses
4 c. flour
4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
2 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. ground ginger
2 heaping tsp. cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 350º F.
2. Mix together until creamy the sugar and shortening. Add the eggs and molasses and mix well.
3. Add flour, salt, pepper, cloves, ginger and cinnamon and mix. Add baking soda last and mix well.
4. Roll dough into slightly larger than golf-ball size balls and roll in additional sugar.
5. Bake on an uncreased cookie sheet (do not press down) for 8 minutes. Cookies will rise and when they begin to crack on the top, they are ready to come out. Do not overcook.
6 To keep cookies moist and chewy, while still warm, place in a covered plastic container or zip lock bag immediately.
