1/2 C. unsalted butter
3/4 C. sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract
1 1/4 C. all purpose flour
1/3 C. cocoa powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 candy cane, crushed
1/3 C. dark, bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips

1. In large bowl, cream softened butter with sugar. Add egg and peppermint extract and beat until light and fluffy.
2. Add flour, salt, cocoa powder, baking soda, and bake powder to a sifter and sift gradually into the wet ingredients, mixing well.
3. Add chocolate chips and stir with spoon. Chill in freezer while oven heats.
4. Form the dough into small balls and place 1 1/2 inches apart on ungreased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Press the tops down and add a few more chocolate chips.
5. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The edges should start to dry but the tops slightly soft looking.
6. Sprinkle crushed candy cane on immediately.
7. Transfer to a cooling rack to rest until completely cooled. Store in airtight container.
