1/2 C. shortening
1/2 C. butter
1 C. powdered sugar
1 egg (slightly beaten)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. almond extract
2 1/2 C. flour
1 tsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
1. Cream shortening and butter together.
2. Mix in powdered sugar, add egg, vanilla and almond extract until well mixed.
3. Add flour and salt and mix until it forms a dough.
4. Divide the dough in half and add red food coloring to half of the dough.
5. Chill at least 30 minutes.
6. Make a walnut size ball out of the white dough and one out of the red dough.
7. Begin to make a 5" rope out of each ball. Start rolling and twisting them together. Shape into candy cane and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
8. Bake at 375º for 7-9 minutes.
9. Gently handle and dust with granulated sugar while warm.

(I usually double the recipe)
