2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
3 cups flour
1 tsp each, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice
1 tsp soda
3 medium apples, chopped
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup warm water

Icing:
1 stick butter
3 Tbsp flour
½ tsp salt
½ cup milk
½ cup brown sugar
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup finely chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350º.

Cream the sugar and shortening together. Add eggs, beating mixture after each addition. Sift dry ingredients together. Add flour to shortening mixture alternately with warm water, starting and ending with dry.

Bake 1 hour, 30 minutes in a tube pan.

Icing:
Melt the butter. Blend in the flour and salt. Stir in milk slowly. Boil 1 minute. Add brown sugar. Cook until the brown sugar is melted. Remove from the stove. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and nuts, and beat until thick and creamy. Spread on cake.
