"As viscous as motor oil swirled in a swamp, redolent of burnt bell peppers nested in by incontinent mice and a finish reminiscent of the dregs of a stale can of Coca-Cola that someone has been using as an ashtray. Not a bad drink, though."--Excerpt from "The Moose Turd Wine Tasting" by T. A. Nonymous

Dissolve yeast in water, set aside.
Cream butter, sugar and salt. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well. Once milk has cooled to lukewarm, add this also. Add dissolved yeast and mix. Beat in the flour gradually. Cover dough with a light towel and set in a warm place until double.

Turn onto a floured board. Shape into small balls. Place on greased pans. Brush with melted lard and let raise again until light.

With fingers, pat into flat rounds, indenting the middle and leaving an edge. Fill with desired filling (e.g. poppy seed, prune, apricot, etc.). Let rise again for a few minutes. Bake at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes. If desired, brush the edges with melted butter.
