Ingredients:
Ingredients:
¾ cup sugar
¼ cup flour
¼ - ½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp cinnamon
dash salt
6 cups thinly sliced pared tart apples
2 tbsp butter

Directions:
Directions:
Stir together sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt; mix with apples. Turn into unbaked 9” shell; dot with butter. Cover with top crust which has slits cut in it; seal and flute. Cover edge with aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning; remove foil last 15 minutes of baking. Bake at 425º 40-50 minutes or until crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in crust.

For French Apple Pie - omit butter and top filling with Crumb Topping: Mix 1 cup flour, ½ cup firm butter and ½ cup brown sugar (packed) until crumbly. Bake 50 minutes then cover topping with foil last 10 minutes of baking if top browns too quickly. Best served warm with ice cream.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is from my Betty Crocker Cookbook and is the one Mimi, Great-Grandma and Grandma always used. The first time I attempted it, I baked “French Apple” and Great-Granddad said it was as good as Mimi’s. Now whether or not that was true, it certainly made me feel good and I didn’t bake another apple pie for years because I was afraid it wouldn’t turn out as well!
