1 lb. hamburger
1/2 c. onion, chopped
2 med. carrots, diced
2 c. potatoes, cubed
1 c. cabbage, shredded
1 c. celery
4 c. tomatoes
1/2 c. rice
1 1/2 qt. water
4 tsp. salt*
1/8 tsp. pepper

Directions:
Brown meat and onion slightly in 2 T. butter*, add rest of ingredients in large kettle, add water and simmer slowly 45-60 minutes. Serve with crackers or a great bread.

We love this recipe--we have modified it; however.
We do not brown the meat in butter and 1 tsp. of salt seems sufficient.
