1 qt buttermilk
1/3 c molasses
1 c white flour
1 tsp salt
4 tsp baking soda
coarse whole wheat flour

Directions:
Directions:
Heat the oven to 300 degrees F. Blend the wet ingredients. Combine all the
ingredients, except the whole wheat flour. Add the whole wheat flour until the batter is
the consistency of thick cake batter. Divide the batter into two greased single loaf bread
pans. Bake until a tooth pick comes out clean, approximately 45-60 minutes.

My Grandmother, Gertruida Vanderwal Doornbos, made this bread on the days that she
made butter, so she could use the fresh buttermilk. When my Dad went into town, she
always tried to send something home with him and a lot of times it was a loaf of this
bread. My kids love the bread warm with butter and honey. I love it with a sharp
cheese.
