1 cup lukewarm milk
½ cup sugar
2 packages yeast
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
⅓ cup shortening
4 ½ to 5 cups flour
½ cup chopped almonds
¼ cup citron or candied fruit
1 tablespoon lemon rind

Directions:

Mix together 1 cup lukewarm milk, ½ cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt. Add 2 packages of yeast. Stir until yeast is dissolved.

Stir in 2 eggs, ⅓ cup shortening, and 4 ½ to 5 cups flour. Mix first with spoon, then with hands. After second rising divide and turn out on floured board. (Will make 2 rolls.) Distribute fruit, nuts, and lemon rind over rolled out dough. Kneed fruit into dough. Pat dough in 8” x 12” oval. Spread with soft butter. Fold in half the long way. Form into crescent. Press edge firmly so that it will not spring open. Place on greased cookie sheet. Brush with melted butter. Let rise until double. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

May frost with confectionary sugar, if desired

Makes 2 rolls.
