5 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. cloves
½ tsp. mace
1 lb. shortening
1 lb. sifted brown sugar
8 eggs, well beaten
½ lb. candied cherries
½ lb. candied citron
½ lb. orange and lemon peel
1 lb. seedless raisins
1 lb. currents, washed and dried
1 lb. almonds, blanched and broken
¾ cup honey
½ cup currant jelly
⅓ cup molasses

Mix and sift flour, soda, salt, spices. Cream shortening. Add sugar gradually, beat until fluffy. Beat in eggs, then fruit and nuts. Add jelly, honey, and molasses. Beat well, add flour mixture gradually. Mixing well after each addition. Turn into 2 paper-lined greased tube pans. Bake slow, 250º for 3½ hours or until cake is firm to touch. Place brown paper on top to keep from browning too fast. Cool in pan. Remove paper , wrap in waxed paper and store in air-tight cans.
