1 can (14-1/2 oz.) pitted tart cherries, undrained
1 cup sugar, divided

3 tbsp. butter, melted

Topping:

Whipped cream

Directions:
Directions:
In large saucepan, combine the cherries with juice, 3/4 cup sugar and water; bring to a boil.
Reduce heat; cover & simmer.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and remaining sugar. Stir in milk & butter until moistened. Drop by tablespoons onto simmering cherry mixture.

Cover & simmer for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in a dumpling comes out clean (do not lift cover while simmering).

Top with bread crumbs and whipped cream.

P.S. Mom made bread crumbs using white bread & added butter, toasting until bread crumbs turned brownish, then sprinkled on top with whipped cream.

Submitted by Kim B,
Mom and I went out to eat quite a bit when I lived in Manitowoc. One of the faves was the Gallery Restaurant. On this particular day we arrived in the morning, so we ordered breakfast. Mom ordered waffles or pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. When we were through eating, the waitress came over and took our empty plates away. Mom then said to me "She had better come back before she brings the check because I want dessert!"

I had to laugh because it seemed she already had eaten dessert for breakfast :) Mom had quite a sweet tooth throughout most of her life, which she passed on to her daughters.
