1 stick butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 3/4 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons orange extract
1/2 cups pecans, chopped
1 Tablespoons grated orange rind
1/4 cup crisco
3 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup dates, chopped

Frosting:
1/4 cup plus 2 Tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 cup plus 1-2 Tablespoons orange juice
2 drops red food coloring (optional)
3-4 drops yellow food coloring (optional)
6 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
1 Tablespoon orange rind

Cake:
Cream butter and crisco. Add sugar, beating well at medium speed. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Combine flour, soda and salt; add to cream mixture alternating with buttermilk. Beat at high speed for 3 minutes. Stir in orange extract, dates, pecans and 1 Tablespoon orange rind. Pour batter into 3 greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and let cool completely.

Frosting:
Cream butter, add powdered sugar; alternating with 1/4 cup plus 1 Tablespoon orange juice. Add orange extract and orange rind; beat until smooth. Add more juice if needed. Add food coloring if desired.
