Ingredients:
Ingredients:
Large bowl (glass or metal), buttered, full of popcorn

1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup light Karo syrup
1/2 cup water
1 tsp salt

3 T butter
1 tsp vanilla
food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
1 tsp baking sodasugar, syrup, water and salt in saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until a 9" string forms.*

Remove from heat. Add butter, vanilla, and food coloring. Pour over popcorn. Mix until just cool enough to handle. With well-buttered hands, quickly form balls.

Let balls cool and wrap individually in plastic wrap.

* As it cooks, the sugar mixture will thicken slightly. Using a clean metal spoon, dip into the mixture and hold the spoon up to just above eye level. As the mixture cools, it will slowly drip, leaving what looks like a very fine hair trailing from it. It will probably take a few tests to reach this point.

Continuous stirring is crucial.

Mama would make these for Halloween every year, and occasionally throughout the year for treats.
