Personal Notes:
This is essentially the same recipe (sans chips) as Joni's Chocolate Chip Cake in the 1991 family cookbook (Ellen used yogurt, Joni used sour cream). It was given to me by my neighbor Ellen Berkowitz, who lived behind Aunt Bessie in Flatbush in the early 1980's (Kim & I lived next door to Aunt Bessie in our first house). It was a very popular recipe at the time, promoted I think by the Duncan Hines cake mix company. I made it often, as did Joni, & one day we realized that independently we made the same cake. When I noticed that no one had reproduced it from the earlier book I felt it had to be included. It's still just as good & a tradition at many dinners.
