1½ cup corn meal
½ cup flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
dash of salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1⅓ cup milk
1 egg

2 table spoons corn oil or bacon drippings

Directions:
Directions:
Put corn oil or bacon drippings into cast iron skillet and heat until very hot.

Mix dry ingredients. Add egg and milk. Mix until smooth.

Pour batter into hot skillet. Bake at 450º for 20 to 25 minutes. Check for doneness with toothpick.

This is not a sweet cornbread and has the taste I grew up on. I think my grandmother had cornbread on her table everyday.
