½ c. shortening (may use part butter or margarine
¼ c. brown sugar (packed)
1 egg - separated
½ teas. vanilla
1 c. flour
¼ teas. salt
¾ c. finely chopped nuts
Jelly or tinted icing

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla thoroughly. Blend together flour and salt; stir in. Roll dough into balls (1 teas. per ball). Beat the egg white slightly with fork. Dip balls in egg white and roll in nuts. Put 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Press with thumb. Bake at 350º for 8-10 minutes. Cool and fill thumbprint!
