Directions:
Combine brown sugar, salt and water in top of double boiler. Broil over moderate heat to thick syrup (about 5 min.). Mix 1/4 cup milk and cornstarch to thin paste, add 1 3/4 cups milk, then combine with hot syrup and cook over double boiler 15 min. Mix small amount of sugar mixture with egg yolks and return to syrup mixture and cook 5 min. more. Add vanilla and butter and cool. Pour into cooked pie shell and add meringue.

Note: You can do all this in a thick bottom pot and not use the double boiler if you are careful not to scorch.
