2 cups fresh dates (chopped)
1 Tbl. baking soda

1 tsp, salt
6 Tbl. crisco
1 1/2 cups boiling water

2 cup sugar
4 eggs, slightly beaten
3 cups AP flour
2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups walnuts (chopped)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix the dates, baking soda, salt, crisco and boiling water together. Let stand for 20 minutes.
Mix the sugar, eggs, flour and vanilla together.
Add the walnuts.
Grease 2 bread loaves and fill the pans up to 3/4.

Bake at 350º for 45-60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

This was my favorite snack when I got home from school. I especially love it when it is warm with sweet butter or cream cheese.
Nana would always make a bunch of these loaves, give them to friends as well as freezing them.
