5 lbs pickling cucumbers
4 cups Vinegar
2 tbls powdered Alum
2 tbls Salt
1/4 cup Pickling *Schilling or McCormicks
5 cups Sugar
1 Glass Gallon Jar

Directions:

Brine:
Mix vinegar, alum, salt and pickling spice until dissolved.

Pack the cucumbers tightly in the jar. Pour brine over and add water until jar is full. Shake to mix.

Let stand for 30 days. Shake once a day - does not need refrigerated.

At end of 30 days drain and wash pickles and jar. Slice the pickles (cut lengthwise into fourths). Layer pickles and sugar. Put the lid on tightly and put in refrigerator. Pickles are ready when the suger is dissolved.

These pickles have become a family favorite not just at holidays but anytime we visit Grama Betty. Grandpa is now making them - gallons and gallons at a time!
