1 cup Shortening
1 cup Sugar
2 Eggs (beaten)
1/4 cup Light Corn Syrup
1/2 cup Molasses
1/3 cup Water
1 tsp Baking Soda
6 2/3 cup Flour
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Allspice
4 tsp Anise Seed (crushed)
1/4 tsp Cloves
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1/4 tsp Black Pepper
1 tsp Anise Extract

Directions:

Mix ingredients together. The last cup or two of flour cannot be stirred with a spoon - use your hands. Form into balls the size of a small walnut. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 375º until light brown or slightly firm. DO NOT OVERBAKE. Roll lightly while warm (NOT HOT) in confectioners sugar.
