1/2 C. shortening
1 1/2 C. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. butter flavoring
1.5 oz. red food coloring
3 Tbsp. cocoa
2 1/2 C. flour
1 C. buttermilk
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1 Tbsp. vinegar

Icing:
5 Tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 C. milk
1 1/2 C. shortening
1 1/2 C. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. Butter flavoring

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, flavorings together. make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add the first mixture. Alternately, add flour and buttermilk; mix soda and vinegar in a small bowl, add to batter. Blend. Bake at 350º in three 9 inch cake pans for 20-30 minutes. Cook, then ice.

Icing:
Cook milk, flour and salt until thick and let cool. Mix together sugar, shortening and flavorings, then add to flour mixture. Beat until no grains of sugar can be tasted.
