6, 1" slices Challah or Country Bread (I used lots of different white breads,thinner sliced 4-5 layers)
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 tablespoons corn syrup (I use maple syrup)
5 large eggs
1 1/2 cups half-and-half or cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup packed brown sugar

In a small, heavy saucepan melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup over moderate heat until smooth. Pour mixture into a 13x9x2" baking dish.
Cut 6, 1" slices from loaf of bread and arrange in baking dish, on top of brown sugar mixture, squeezing in to fit.
In a bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, vanilla,and salt. Pour mixture evenly over bread.
Cover baking dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake bread mixture, uncovered, in the oven until puffed and golden, 35 minutes. Serve immediately, garnished with orange twists.

We tried this one year to make Christmas morning less hectic, since you prepare it the night before. It became an instant favorite and now is our traditional Christmas breakfast. The kids love to add fresh fruit and whipped cream.
