1 c. milk
3 T. corn starch
1/2 c. softened butter
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening

Cake mixture:
2 2/3 c. flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 c. hot water

Directions:
Directions:
In a saucepan, stir together milk and corn starch. Stir on med. heat until bubbly. Stir and cook 2 minutes more. Set aside to cool for 30 minutes. In another bowl beat the butter, sugar and shortening into the cooled milk mixture until doubled in volume, about 5 minutes.

To make the cake: In a small bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, beat sugar and shortening together with hand mixer. Add 2 eggs and vanilla; beat until combined. Alternate adding flour mixture, buttermilk and hot water; blend on low speed. Drop dough by large tablespoons onto cookie sheet. Bake at 350º for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 24 pies.
