Sauce:

2 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 boiling water
1/8 tsp. salt

Dough:

1 1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/3 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. soft butter
1/3 cup milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
1. Mix sauce ingredients together in a 3 quart sauce pan.
2. Boil gently for 5 minutes.
3. In a mixing bowl sift together dry ingredients and cut in the butter.
4. Add milk and vanilla to the mixture creating a dough.
5. Shape dough into dumplings and drop into the boiling sauce.
6. Cover tightly and boil gently over low heat for 20 minutes without removing lid.

Caramel and butterscotch sauces were Dad's ice cream toppings of choice. He would always include maple bars in his bakery purchases and preferred homemade penuche over chocolate fudge. Mom's caramel dumplings were one of his favorite desserts. She served them warm, and they were yummy!
