If you really want to impress your guest, try this simple recipe for English Trifle
Here is my simple recipe that I learnt in cookery class back in England.

1. Packet of Jello (bottle of sherry if you wish soak the sponge in the sherry before putting the jello over it if making for adults or you can skip the jello if using sherry)
2. Fresh fruit of your choice cut into small pieces or use a medium tine of fruit , drain the juice from the fruit
3. Sponge cake cut into strips, or sponge lady fingers
4. Birdseye custard
5. Whipping cream (in England we use to use something called Angle delight,, not sure if you can get it in Canada)
6. Large bowl
7. Sprinkles for decoration or fresh fruit of your choice

Take a large bowl and place some sponge cake at the bottom with some fresh fruit of your choice or canned fruit.
Make your jello and pour over the sponge cake and fruit , put it in the fridge and let it set.
Make some custard... use the Birds eye variety .. put it in the fridge and let it cool down.
You will need some whipped cream.. best to make it your self rather than buying off the shelf but it can be used.
So here it is once you have prepared, jello, custard and cream your all set to go .
Using the bowl with the jello, fruit and sponge
Place a layer of custard on the Jello
Then place some fruit on the custard
Place some cream on the fruit and the custard
Layer more fruit and custard finishing off with cream
Garnish with the sprinkles of your choice or nuts or whatever you like.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
While there are various varieties of English Trifles the basics of the recipe is sponge cake, custard, cream fruit and a twist of sherry for the adults. At school we were taught to make it with jello and sponge cake. Like I said there are various ways you can make using cake, sponge fingers or pound cake, fresh fruit, low calorie cream, Sherry etc.
