3 T flour
½ c milk (whole is best, any will do)
½ c butter
½ granulated sugar
1 t vanilla, or flavoring of choice

Whisk together flour and milk. Heat in small pan on medium heat.
Whisk continuously until it starts to thicken. Let it cook, while stirring with a rubber spatula, until you can start to see the bottom of the pan. Continue to cook until the mixture has the consistency of a thick pudding or paste.
Put mixture in the fridge to cool completely,; you don’t want it warm at all. Stirring occasionally can speed the process.
In an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar for a minute or two until well combined and fluffy. You’ll want to use the whisk attachment. While beating, add in the thickened milk mixture and vanilla. Beat to combine and then scrape down the sides. Mixture may separate and look messy; keep beating. Continue beating until mixture comes together and is light and fluffy, about 7-8 min. Frosting is done when sugar granules have dissolved

A mom at the daycare I worked at brought in cupcakes with this frosting. Because so many people loved it, our director asked for the recipe. It is my very favorite frosting.
