Directions:
Mix together thoroughly: shortening, brown sugar, and egg. Stir in sweet or sour cream and vanilla.
Sift togther and stir in flour, soda, cream of tartar and salt. Mix together until smooth. Divide dough into 2 parts. Place a piece of waxed paper over pastry board or cloth then roll each piece of dough into a rectangle about 11 x 7 inches. Spread each rectangle with half the date nut mixture. Drop small amount of filling over entire surface of rectangle and then spread. Roll up beginning at the wide side by lifting the wax paper to roll the dough. Pinch edges of dough into roll. Wrap each roll in waxed paper and chill until firm-at least several hours, preferably overnight. Cut into 1/4 inch slices. Place on lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake at 400º about 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Date Nut Filling: Place in saucepan, dates, sugar and water. Cook until slightly thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and cool. Stir in nuts.
