1 cup shortening
1 ½ cups molasses
¼ cup sugar
4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon soda
2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoon ginger
½ teaspoon cloves
1 egg

Directions:
Directions:
Melt shortening in a large saucepan. Stir in molasses and sugar; cool. Sift together flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Mix a small amount of flour mixture into the molasses mixture. Beat in the egg. Add remaninging flour, blending until smooth. Chill dough about 2 hours. Shape into 1 ¼ inch balls. Place about an inch apart on cookie sheets. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 15 minutes. If desired, spread half of the cookies, while still warm, with a glaze made from confectioners’ sugar and water. Store in a closely covered container. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
