Measure into mixing bowl:
2 ½ cups sifted cake flour
1 ¼ cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2/3 cup Crisco
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon allspice
1/3 cup molasses
2/3 cup milk

Beat vigourously by hand or mixer (medium speed) for 2 minutes.

Stir in:
2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon soda

Add:
3 eggs
½ cup milk.

Mix thoroughly by hand or mixer (medium speed) for 2 minutes. Pour into two deep 9-inch pans (1 ½” deep) which have been rubbed with Crisco or lined with heavy waxed paper. (For smaller pans, fill half full, bake cupcakes with remaining batter). Bake in moderate oven (375°F) for about 35 minutes. Cool cakes on a rack 15 minutes before attempting to remove from the pan. Loosen cake edges; place rack over top of cake and pan and invert together. Ice between layers, on sides, and on top of cake.

THEY RECOMMEND SEVEN MINUTE FROSTING (listed later).
