For Cake:
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
2 ounces red food coloring
2 teaspoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vinegar

For Icing:
3 Tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup butter (2 sticks)
1 teaspoon vanilla

For Cake:
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Add salt, buttermilk and cake flour. Make paste of red food color, cocoa and vanilla. Beat into batter. At last minute add 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon vinegar. (DO NOT BEAT.) Bake in 3 layers at 350º for 30-35 minutes.

For Icing:
Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool until VERY COLD. Beat sugar, butter and vanilla until fluffy and then beat in milk and flour mixture. Spread on cake and sprinkle with nuts.
