Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 cup butter
1 3/4 cups sugar
2 eggs
3 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:
Directions:
1. In a medium bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat eggs in one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda, salt and nutmeg; stir into creamed mixture. Knead dough a few times and refrigerate till firm.

2. Preheat oven to 325º. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to about 5/8 inch in thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Alternatively, you can roll about 1/8 cup of dough to a ball in your hand. Pat until about 5/8 inch thick. Place cookies 1 1/2 inches apart onto cookie sheets lined with parchment paper.

3. Bake for 8 a 10 minutes. Do not overlook! The cookies should not be browned and should remain the color of the dough. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Note: You may sprinkle about 1/2 tsp of granulated sugar on top of cookies prior to baking for a slightly sweet taste. You can also ice these cookies when completely cooled. Children like to do that and you can even use colored icing and sprinkles for a special treat. Great Christmas cookies!

Traditional Family Recipe My grandmother, Momoo make these soft tea cakes regularly and kept them in the old pig cookie jar for an after school treat. I remember them being large and soft and perfect with a glass of milk! Of course she never wrote down the recipe she used, but I think this is close. Part of the fun was taking off the head of the pig cookie jar to see if there were tea cakes inside! They were always right there waiting for me and cousins Alice Faye and Pam!
Love to all, Mimi
