2 sticks butter
1½ cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2½ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
¼ teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all ingredients together well. Knead slightly and shape into three rolls about two inches wide each. Place into wax paper and twist ends together on each roll. Chill overnight. The next day, slice chilled dough into thin slices of approximately ½ inch or less each. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350º for about ten minutes.Cool completely and store.
