2/3 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
3 cups cake flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups sour milk or buttermilk
4 squares bakers chocolate
2 teaspoons baking soda, dissolved into small amount of water
2 teaspoons vanilla

7 Minute Frosting:

2 egg whites, well-beaten
1-1/2 cups sugar
5 tablespoons cold water
1-1/2 teaspoons Karo syrup
Pinch of salt

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Grease and flour 3 round cake pans and set aside. In a double boiler over boiling water, melt the 4 squares of bakers chocolate. In a large mixing bowl, cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. In a separate, small bowl, mix together flour and salt. Alternatively add flour/salt mixture and buttermilk, beating after each addition. Dissolve the 2 teaspoons of baking soda into a small amount of water and add to batter, along with vanilla and melted chocolate - beat to combine. Divide batter evenly between the 3 cake pans. Bake for 45 minutes or until done.

Frosting:

Put ingredients in double boiler over boiling water. Beat constantly until peaks form or for seven minutes. Remove from heat and add the vanilla. Beat until combined.
