2 gallons cucumbers, split lengthwise
1 pint salt
1 gallon boiling water
Chunk of alum the size of a walnut
1 quart vinegar
5 pints sugar
Handful of mixed spices (pickling spice)

Directions:
Directions:
1. Put cukes, salt and water in a crock and let stand for 1 week.
2. Drain water off and pour on 1 gallon of boiling water and alum. Let stand 24 hours.
3. Drain – boil vinegar, 1-1/2 quarts water, sugar and spices. Pour over pickles while hot and let stand for 24 hours.
4. Drain and boil over again for 4 successive mornings.
5. Let stand for 3 more days and then can and seal.
