2 lbs shredded red cabbage
2/3 cup red wine vinegar
2 tbsp sugar
2 tsp salt
2 tbsp bacon fat or butter
2 apples, cored, peeled, and chopped
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 whole onion, stuck with 2 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
3-4 cups boiling water
3 tbsp dry red wine
3 tbsp grape jelly

Directions:
Directions:
Put the shredded red cabbage in a large bowl. Sprinkle it with vinegar, sugar, and salt. Toss.

Melt fat or butter in a large pan. Add chopped onions and apples. Saute for 5 minutes. Add cabbage, whole onion with cloves, and bay leaf. Mix well. Ad water and simmer for about 1 1/2 hours, until cabbage is tender. Add more water, if becoming too dry.

When cabbage is soft, remove whole onion and bay leaf. Add the red wine and grape jelly. Heat until flavors are well blended.
