1/2 cup butter
6 (or MORE) Vidalia onions (sliced)
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup milk
salt and pepper, to taste
3/4 lb. gruyere or Swiss cheese, cut up to aid in melting
French bread, sliced into about 1-inch slices
melted butter

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Butter casserole dish (like a 9 X 13).
Melt butter in large skillet and add sliced onions.
Sauté until tender and translucent (almost caramelized).
Stir often.
Combine milk, soup, and salt and peppers in a bowl.
Pour over onions that have been placed in casserole dish.
Sprinkle cut cheese over top.
Add a couple of teaspoons of butter to hot skillet (the one used for onions).
Place slices of French bread into skillet to brown on one side.
Place bread when browned on top of onion mixture in casserole dish, browned side up.
Bake until bread browns a little more (about 30 minutes) but mainly to melt cheese.
Serve hot.

Note: To take this dish over the top, use either prepared garlic bread or garlic bread
with cheese in place of the French bread. Prepared side up of course.
