Directions: |
Directions:Mix all the syrup ingredients together and bring to a boil. Meanwhile mix all of the dumpling ingredients together (except for cinnamon) like you would if you were making biscuits. Add just enough milk to get right texture (a little thicker than biscuit dough). Roll dough out to about ½ inch think and cut into 2 inch squares. Drop dumplings into mixture, cover and boil about 20 minutes (syrup will thicken). Do not uncover while cooking! Turn off or take off heat and keep covered for 5 or 10 minutes. Then pour into a big bowl and sprinkle with cinnamon. |

Notes: This is probably the oldest recipe in our collection. Vinegar Dumplings now seem to be pretty much a thing of the past. I always assumed they originated during the Depression because they are a cheap dish using only a few basic ingredients. They were a treat when either Grandma or Mom made them and I loved them hot when they were fresh-made or cold right out of the refrigerator as left-overs the next day (if there were any).
