3 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup oleo
2 eggs
4 T. water
1/2 cup sugar

Apples

2 cups sugar
6 T. flour

1/4 pound butter

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in margarine. Beat eggs with water and sugar and add to flour mixture. Press dough in bottom and up sides of a large, deep cookie sheet. Arrange peeled, sliced apples on dough in overlapping rows. Make streusel with sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg, cutting in butter. Cover apples with streusel. Bake at 450º for 15 minutes, then at 375º for another 15 minutes, or until apples are soft and crust is brown. This recipe can be halved for a 9 x 13 pan but we always made it in a cookie sheet. According to Grandma Spindler, half a recipe will feed 2 men or 6 women.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
My mother got this recipe from a PTA board meeting at another member's home and it has been a staple during apple season in our home for many years (since I was in grade school). The dough can be used in any recipe for a fruit "kuchen" such as rhubarb. Mom called it "maizieengledough". My dad always peeled and sliced the apples. When I started making it at our house, Ron did the honors with the apples but bought an apple peeler and slicer and always enlisted the help of any grandchildren who happened to be around.
